Resources

At the Association of Master Tradesmen we have lots of useful resources to help you before and during your build, from our Free Building Guide and contract templates, to advice on stage payments

We recommend you follow our essential steps before undertaking any building work.

Essential Steps

  • Draw up a contract with the builder before work starts so that you have an agreement set out in black and white.
  • Create a payment schedule making sure that you only release a payment once each agreed stage is completed. (It’s very important that you stick to your own stage payment plan as problems can occur when overpayments are made to a builder)
  • Inform Building Control of the work taking place and get them to sign off the work at each completed stage (ideally combine payments with each stage sign off).
  • Notify your insurance company that work is taking place as they need to be informed to ensure you are fully covered.

Free Building Guide

This free resource contains must-read advice for anyone thinking about building work, whether you have chosen a builder or if you’re in the early planning stages. It covers everything you need to know from getting builder quotes, checklists of questions to ask your builder and questions to ask their references, and our top tips to avoid making costly mistakes.
